10 STEPS TO UNDERSTANDING HOW RACIAL INEQUITIES AFFECT LGBTQ COMMUNITIES OF COLOR

How can grantmakers address the historical policies, practices and values that continue to shape the lives of people of color? And what does it mean to take this structural lens and apply it to LGBTQ people of color? The following tool proposes some answers, borrowing from a framework produced by The Aspen Institute and relating it to the programming offered by the Providence Youth Student Movement in Providence, RI. Case Study

The Providence Youth Student Movement (PrYSM) works to "confront and end state, street and interpersonal violence affecting the Southeast Asian American community in Rhode Island." Rooted in youth development and community organizing strategies, its programs include a GED preparatory course, a women’s support group, an organizing program for high school students (and related campaigns), a regional and national network, and a program for LGBTQ youth name seaQuel. The examples used in this tool are based on the original analysis of PrYSM's staff, board and other leaders.
